Background of the Study
Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients with terminal illnesses by managing pain, addressing psychological and spiritual needs, and supporting families (Nwafor et al., 2024). Nurses play a crucial role in palliative care by ensuring that patients receive compassionate care that aligns with ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence (Okoro et al., 2023). Ethical decision-making in palliative care is often complicated by factors such as limited resources, family expectations, and the cultural norms surrounding end-of-life care (Ike et al., 2023). In conflict zones like Borno State, where the healthcare system faces numerous challenges, the adherence to ethical principles in palliative care by nurses may be further compromised due to stress, trauma, and the lack of training. This study appraises how nurses at Borno State Specialist Hospital make ethical decisions in palliative care and their adherence to these principles.

Statement of the Problem
Nurses working in palliative care settings often face complex ethical dilemmas that require sound ethical decision-making. In Borno State Specialist Hospital, ethical challenges may arise due to the stressful nature of providing care to terminally ill patients, limited access to resources, and conflicting expectations from families and the broader community (Fashola et al., 2023). There is limited research on how nurses in this region navigate these ethical issues and adhere to established ethical frameworks in palliative care. This study aims to evaluate the adherence of nurses to ethical decision-making in palliative care at Borno State Specialist Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the adherence of nurses to ethical decision-making in palliative care at Borno State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To examine the factors that influence ethical decision-making by nurses in palliative care.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in maintaining ethical standards in palliative care in Borno State Specialist Hospital.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurses at Borno State Specialist Hospital adhere to ethical decision-making in palliative care?
  2. What factors influence ethical decision-making by nurses in palliative care at Borno State Specialist Hospital?
  3. What challenges do nurses at Borno State Specialist Hospital face in maintaining ethical standards in palliative care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Borno State Specialist Hospital adhere to ethical decision-making principles in palliative care.
  2. Ethical decision-making by nurses significantly impacts the quality of palliative care provided to terminally ill patients.
  3. Organizational and resource-related challenges significantly influence nurses' adherence to ethical principles in palliative care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in palliative care settings at Borno State Specialist Hospital. A limitation is the potential subjectivity of ethical decision-making, which may vary based on personal values and experiences. Additionally, the study will not capture the perspectives of other healthcare professionals involved in palliative care.
